SOS – Save Our Sleep Event
Is your pillow affecting the quality of your sleep?
We know there are so many issues which can influence the quality of sleep, but are you aware that most pillows are coated in toxic chemicals which could also be affecting your sleep.
To pass the UK Fire Regulations fire-retardant chemicals are often added to the pillow cover and fillings. The majority of these flame-retardant chemicals are endocrine disruptors. They are skin permeable and airborne. As your head lies on the pillow each night, you are breathing in these toxic chemicals. The endocrine system has an influence on your circadian rhythm and sleep patterns, so any disruption to this system can affect quality sleep.
Why do manufacturers put fire retardant chemicals on my pillows?
Pillows must meet the UK Fire Regulations. This is how manufacturers do it:
- Hollow-fibre (polyester) pillows are naturally fire retardant. However, because manufacturers like to make the pillows extra bouncy and washable, they add silicone.
- Once silicone is added, this makes the pillow fillings flammable.
- If the fillings are flammable, then the cover must be treated with fire retardant chemicals.
Put simply then, if you don’t treat the fillings with silicone, you don’t need to add the fire-retardant chemicals.
Cottonsafe® pillows (including our Vegan pillows) contain NO fire-retardant chemicals or adhesives as our hollow-fibre filling and covers are not flammable.
