World Sleep Day: To Sleep or Not To Sleep

World Sleep Day 2022 - Quality Sleep | Sound Mind | Happy World
The World Sleep Day website states that as part of their sleep research they found; Individuals getting better quality sleep are perceived to appear more alert, attractive and youthful (we’re in!)
According to research from the NHS nearly one in three of us suffer from poor sleep – the Mental Health Foundation found that nearly 48% of UK adults agree that a bad night’s sleep has a negative impact on their mental health, mood and decision making.
Dr Lindsay Browning - chartered psychologist, neuroscientist, author, sleep expert and writer of troublesleeping.co.uk offers a few basic, good bedtime practices that can help you to improve your night-time sleep.
6 Tips to Improving Sleep this World Sleep Day
Increase Physical Exercise
Incorporating physical exercise into your daily routine can help with improved deeper sleep - and the good news is, you don’t have to be a gym bunny to achieve a better night’s sleep, a brisk walk or a few lengths of your local pool work just as well!
Reduce Anxiety
Easier said then done right?! But it’s hard to sleep when we’re anxious, addressing anxiety levels and find ways to relax during the day will help you be better able to sleep at night.
Reduce Caffeine
We’ve definitely heard this one before - but drinking caffeine too close to bedtime will disrupt sleep, so why not swap your coffee or tea for a warm milky drink, and for the plant-based foodies out there, we’re big fans of a luxurious Coconut Golden Moon Milk.
Don’t Eat Late
Avoid eating your main evening meal too near to bedtime. Although if you’re parents to two small tear-aways like us you’ll probably be guilty of a bowl of “something quick” late into the evening!
Put Down Your Phone
The light from LED devices can disrupt our ability to produce melatonin – the bright light tricks our brains into thinking it’s still daytime. So, as much as you want to complete this evenings Wordle, it’s time to switch off and give your brain a rest.
Get the right mattress and pillows
Dr Browing states; You should choose your mattress based on your sleeping style and weight. The number of pillows you choose will also depend on your sleeping style. You should sleep so that your spine and neck remain in a neutral position during the night.
