Alpaca Children’s Mattress

By law, all mattresses must pass the UK fire regulations. Unfortunately, manufacturers (including ‘natural’ mattress producers) use fire retardant chemicals to do this. Banned across Canada, Europe and US States, because research has proved they damage our health and the environment, the UK is the only country still to use these chemicals. Children are particularly at risk as these chemicals are skin permeable and come out of mattresses in house dust causing damage to children’s health and development.  Click here to find out more.

All our Cottonsafe® children’s mattresses use a unique cover fabric which means there are no chemicals or adhesives used in the manufacture of our mattresses, but they are completely fire safe (in fact much safer than most children’s mattresses in the event of a fire – see more here) and surpass the UK fire regulations.

If you are looking for a more luxurious children’s mattress, we are now able to offer the Children’s mattress with lavish alpaca layers instead of the sheep’s wool. So comfy, you’ll have even more problems getting them out of bed!

Alpaca fleece is the natural fibre harvested from fluffy Alpacas. It is a soft, durable, luxurious and silky natural fibre. While similar to sheep’s wool, it is even softer and more breathable. This is great for children as it helps keep them cool and assists in temperature regulation as it wicks so well.

Alpaca contains has no lanolin, which makes it hypoallergenic – great for kids with problematic skin conditions. Alpaca is naturally water-repellent and fire resistant.

The Alpaca fleece is 400gsm and there is up to 1.3 kilos in a 3′ Children’s mattress. Learn more about Alpaca here.

With a central two-inch deep quality pocket sprung unit in the centre of the mattress, it is constructed with a layer of Cotton Rich felt and a mass of Alpaca fleece on each side. Each mattress is around 12cm deep, which has been proved to be perfect for the correct support level children require. We handcraft the mattress with a side zip.  The cover, however, cannot be removed as it is tufted with felt tufts for comfort, rather than using metal buttons.

Our wonderful Alpaca mattresses are available in a traditional single (3′) and also a small single (2’6) width, both of which are 6’3 in length. We also now offer a longer single suitable for use on European frames (3′ x 6’6).

We always recommend using a water-proof mattress protector with this product.

Looking for something a bit deeper for your bigger kids? Have a look at our Pocket Sprung Futomat (15cm deep), Pure Choice Bed Mattress (23cm deep), or Appledore Bed Mattress (23cm deep).

  1. Mrs Collymore

I purchased 2 alpaca children’s mattresses in January of this year. As my children have Eczema and asthma I wanted to pick a mattress that was more natural. I wanted to wait a while before giving a review to see how the mattresses would settle down. My children absolutely love them they are both very supportive and extremely comfortable so much so that when we go to change our adult bed we will buy one from the adult range from this retailer.

I can say we are all really happy with them delivery was fast. and the quality is of a high standard. I had previously been looking online at buying children’s mattresses when I become aware of how toxic mattresses really are. And considering the amount of time we spend in bed. It is worth investing in a good mattress.

It was very confusing when doing my research as I thought I should be buying an organic mattress but that did not solve the problem as most organic mattresses still use some type of foam or core that still contains chemicals. And its these chemicals that I was trying to avoid. Knowing that my children’s mattresses are natural with no unhealthy flame retardants makes me feel happy that I have made the right choice.

Cottonsafe natural mattresses are a brilliant investment. Thank you Cottonsafe keep up the brilliant work.

Generally very happy with the mattresses. Only 1 has been slept on so far as we bought them for a bunkbed but my younger daughter is still in a cot for a few more months. My 3 year old seems very comfortable on her’s and it certainly seems to act as a good temperature regulator (much warmer than her old mattress for the first few chilly weeks that we had it). We did need to open her windows a lot the first few weeks to get rid of the funny smell but I didn’t mind too much as I knew it was a natural one rather than some horrible chemical smell.

Hopefully they will last for many years to come.

  3. T. Kegozzi

We are very happy with the quality of the mattress, it is extremely comfortable and my son sleeps very well on it. It keeps him warm in the winter, releasing healthy heat. Also, we are reassured by the fact it does not contain any harmful chemicals.

I think a removable, washable cover should be supplied with it though.

Our feedback is definitely positive, thank you so much for such a great product!

  4. G. Darlow

I ordered two Alpaca European size mattresses for my twins. They arrived very well packaged and at the time specified.

We turn the mattresses each week and have noticed each time we remove the bottom sheet we do get a little bit of hair loss I presume that is to be expected with a natural mattress.

Both my children to the best of a three year olds ability have said they are very comfortable and snuggly! I have also tested them and can definitely agree they are comfortable a bit soft for me but as they are aimed at children the support is enough for them.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this company.

  5. G. Roylance

We purchased the alpaca mattress for my 4 year old son’s new midsleeper bed and it has been fantastic! He only started sleeping through the night at 3 so we were nervous that a new bed/mattress might throw off his progress.

After researching and settling on a Cottonsafe mattress, we were so pleased when it arrived that it was very comfortable after trying it ourselves as well as having almost no scent. We previously tried a mattress from Little Green Sheep but found it too hard and it had a slightly unpleasant odor. At this point it has been several months and my son sleeps through the night consistently. We will be ordering another Cottonsafe mattress for his baby sister when the time is right.

  6. G. Coggins

I’m a very happy customer and although some Alpaca hair has come out, ultimately I am pleased with the mattress for my little one!

  7. E. Zitkova

We have received the mattress and are absolutely delighted with it! It’s only been 2 nights but our daughter has slept soundly both times, which is not the usual (:

  8. RP

I have tried single mattresses from Little Green Sheep and Naturalmat and I returned them both. They weren’t comfortable and the smell of latex was overpowering. The Little Green Sheep mattress had my child itching constantly for reasons i am not sure of. I spent months researching the best mattress for my child and in the end i chose the Cottonsafe children’s mattress. In short it’s great. Quality build, comfortable, doesn’t smell horrible. I opted for the Alpaca wool version as i wasn’t sure if sheeps wool was the cause of my childs itching with those other mattresses. My child loves it.

I was so pleased with this mattress that i ordered an adult mattress from Cottonsafe shortly afterwards.
