An Organic Wool mattress: completely chemical free – no add-on treatments, coatings or chemicals.

The Hatherleigh Organic Wool Mattress

We pride ourselves in sourcing completely chemical free mattress fillings and are honest about the advantages and disadvantages of all the materials we use. Some customers still would prefer and request organic certified wool. So, we have introduced a new mattress in our range – The Hatherleigh Organic Wool Mattress

Like all small family businesses and farms, we find the cost of accreditation and certification of organic product considerable. We do not believe in passing these hidden costs on to our customers. So, The Hatherleigh Organic Wool Mattress uses organic wool from a highly reputable wool supplier who produces the best grade organic wool in the UK, and are themselves GOTS and Soil Association accredited for this product. However, if we were to use accreditation logos we would have to add a further 20% onto the price, so we choose not to.

If you are happy with non-organic wool, click here to see our Widecombe Mattress.

The Hatherleigh Organic contains over 19 kilos of organic wool in a king size mattress (over 2.5kg per m² of certified organic wool). If you require further information about our organic wool, please don’t hesitate to give us a call.

Our Hatherleigh Organic Mattress is created by our team of specialist craftsmen. Each mattress is made to order, taking over four hours to craft. Unlike many other wool mattresses on the market our organic wool layers are stitched together and attached to the pocket sprung unit using flax. As with all Cottonsafe® products, we use no adhesives or glue in mattress construction. The body of the mattress is held in place with wool-felt tufts.

The Hatherleigh Organic Mattress is quality assured by our craftsmen in Devon and carries the “Cottonsafe®” brand with a 10-year warranty.

About our Cottonsafe® cover

All wool mattresses can have an itchy or prickly cover fabric, even if they are organic wool. We prefer the soft feel of organic cotton. So, whilst our Cottonsafe® fabric uses pure wool in its blend, it has the distinct advantages of the softer organic cotton, producing a much more comfortable sleep surface.

The Cottonsafe® fabric cover is completely unique and naturally fire retardant with NO ADD ON TREATMENTS such as FIRE RETARDANT COATING OR CHEMICALS. Why should you be concerned about fire retardant chemicals in mattresses? Click here for more information.

We have a method patent pending on our technology. Academic research has proved that Cottonsafe® is the safest mattress on the market – see here.

Cottonsafe® is a blend of organic cotton with natural wool with built in fire barriers. Click here to find out more about Cottonsafe®.

Why use certified organic cotton in the cover? Organic cotton uses far less pesticides and fertilisers than conventional cotton and it comes from original plants which are not genetically modified and have not been treated with chemicals during the processing and packaging, such as washes, bleaches, scents or colouring.

Whilst organic cotton is more expensive than conventional cotton, at Cottonsafe® Natural Mattress we feel that it is definitely worth it. Cotton is a very thirsty product but organic cotton uses less water due to the fact that most farmers use rain-fed watering rather than irrigated water which depletes groundwater sources. Water is a vital resource the world over.

The Cottonsafe® cover is created with a zipped central seam, which simply allows us to add the cover over the hand-sewn mattress fillings. Side-zipping is a European production method.  Many of our customers prefer the zip cover as it proves we are honest and open about the fillings we use in our mattresses – you can see for yourself! Please note, however, this cover cannot be removed as it is tufted in place.

The Hatherleigh fillings and springs

The Hatherleigh Organic, like its sister Widecombe Mattress, has a softer top surface than The Appledore. Under the cover we use layer after layer of organic wool. The mattress is completely turnable and so the fillings are equal on both sides of the spring system, accommodating the enormous amount of wool.

We know that wool has many positive natural properties. It breathes well, bounces back, is naturally fire-retardant as well as being non-allergenic.

Unlike other manufacturers of organic wool mattresses, we don’t add other fillings like foam (by law, full of fire-retardant chemicals). Some suppliers to the mattress industry offer very thin sheets of organic wool (sometimes with small amounts of alpaca, mohair or silk) allowing the manufacturer to claim that their mattress contains these upmarket products. We don’t. The Hatherleigh Organic contains organic wool, organic wool and more organic wool!

In the core of the mattress, we use an award winning 1000 pocket sprung Active Support Technology® spring system. The Hatherleigh mattress is available in medium and firm tension. This spring unit has been well balanced to offer the correct level of support and durability. The metal pocket springs are in their own individual pockets which allows the mattress to adjust and respond to your body weight. Click here to find out more about our springs.

As we use organic materials there may be an initial aroma of lanolin from the mattress. A degree of settlement will naturally occur over time due to the amount of organic wool used.  This process may be accelerated by constant pressure or lying in a certain area leaving a slight hollow.  This is quite natural; over time this will smooth out when the fillings settle evenly. Occasional turning of the mattress will also help this settlement.
