The Widecombe Natural Mattress

Widecombe WoolFor lovers of pure natural wool, our Widecombe Mattress contains over 2.5kg per m² of fine British wool. That’s massive – over 19 kilos in each king size mattress.

If you’d prefer this mattress with an organic wool filling, select the Organic Wool option from the drop down menu. We call this organic wool version of the Widecombe the Hatherleigh.

Our fabulous Widecombe mattresses are handcrafted to order. The fillings are stitched together with flax thread – we use no glues or adhesives. We even hand tuft our mattresses with wool-felt.  The Widecombe bed mattress is quality assured by our craftsmen in Devon and carries the “Cottonsafe®” brand with a 10-year warranty.

  • A highly breathable all wool mattress with our fabulous organic cotton and wool cover.
  • Cottonsafe® cover with embroidered logo
  • Medium or Firm support feel with a luxury 1000 spring count
  • Turnable Active Support Technology®
  • No fire retardant chemicals
  • No adhesives or glues used in the manufacturing process
  • 10 year manufacturing guarantee
  • Unlike all other mattresses, we comply with the Stockholm Convention on recycling and each mattress is clearly labelled as such

Our Cottonsafe® Cover

All wool mattresses can have an itchy or prickly cover fabric. We prefer the soft feel of organic cotton. So, whilst our Cottonsafe® fabric uses pure wool in its blend, it has the distinct advantages of the softer organic cotton, producing a much more comfortable sleep surface.

The Cottonsafe® fabric cover is completely unique and naturally fire retardant with NO ADD ON TREATMENTS such as FIRE RETARDANT COATING OR CHEMICALS. Why should you be concerned about fire retardant chemicals in mattresses? Click here for more information.

We have a method patent pending on our technology. Academic research has proved that Cottonsafe® is the safest mattress on the market – see here.

Cottonsafe® is a blend of organic cotton with natural wool with built in fire barriers. Click here to find out more about Cottonsafe®.

Why use certified Organic cotton in the cover? Organic cotton uses far less pesticides and fertilisers than conventional cotton and it comes from original plants which are not genetically modified and have not been treated with chemicals during the processing and packaging, such as washes, bleaches, scents or colouring. Whilst organic cotton is more expensive than conventional cotton at Cottonsafe® Natural Mattress we feel that it is definitely worth it. Cotton is a very thirsty product but organic cotton uses less water due to the fact that most farmers use rain-fed watering rather than irrigated water which depletes groundwater sources. Water is a vital resource the world over.

The outer Cottonsafe® cover is sewn together traditionally using a tape edge machine.

Widecombe Fillings & Springs

The Widecombe has a softer top surface than The Appledore. Under the cover we use layer after layer of fine, natural British wool to give the mattress its luxury feel.

Wool has many positive natural properties. It breathes well, bounces back, is naturally fire-retardant as well as being non-allergenic. The layer of wool directly on top of the springs is heavily needled to form a cushion.

Unlike other manufacturers of wool mattresses, we don’t add other fillings like foam (by law, full of fire-retardant chemicals). Just wool, wool and more pure wool! Some suppliers to the mattress industry offer very thin sheets of wool (sometimes with small amounts of alpaca, mohair or silk) allowing the retailer to claim that their mattress contains these upmarket products. We don’t. Our Widecombe contains wool, wool and more pure wool!

Some customers ask why we don’t use organic wool in our Widecombe mattress. This is quite complex issue so we have put together a blog to answer this question. Click here to read more.

In the centre of the mattress we place a 1000 pocket sprung Active Support Technology spring system. etc.  The Widecombe mattress is available in medium and firm tension. This spring unit has been well balanced to offer strength, the correct level of support and durability without making the mattress too heavy. The pocket springs are in their own individual pockets which allows the mattress to adjust and respond to your body weight. Click here to find out more about our springs.

Because we use natural and organic materials with little or no treatment to keep them as natural as possible there may be an aroma of cotton or wool. Also due to the thick layers we use, a degree of settlement will naturally occur over time.  This process may be accelerated by constant pressure or lying in a certain area leaving a slight hollow.  This is quite natural; over time this will smooth out when the fillings settle evenly.

  1. Dr Nik Stanbury

    The back story.

I sleep fairly poorly (asthma and hip and knee problems) and somewhat hot. There is no heating in the bedroom and a window is open all year round.

After speaking at some length to a company I purchased a very expensive memory foam mattress some years back. It was disastrous. Hot and uncomfortable.

    My recent purchase.

Given that the memory foam mattress was not that old I was very reluctant to buy a different mattress. Googling ‘mattresses’, bought up a ‘which’ article that suggested many online purchases were as good as if not better than high street purchases.

Your website came up in the subsequent search. It was remarkably simple to use, I was able to identify the best mattress for my budget and needs.

However even the best website’s often require further clarification. I made 3 phonecalls to your company. Each time my questions were answered quickly and clearly which I must say did inspire confidence.

My order of a Widecombe king size mattress with mattress protector was placed. All subsequent information about delivery etc was by email and in a timely manner.

The order was delivered and installed on the day and time arranged.

Having used the mattress for about 2 months now I can only say I wish I had bought this mattress sooner (or the first time around!).

The weather has been both hot/close and cold/wet (great British weather). This mattress has been a joy to use at all times.

My breathing is noticeably better and the comfort levels are so much better.

I would highly recommend not only this company but also this mattress.

  2. T. Bowden

Both the topper and the mattress are great and a delight to sink into at the end of the day, both for comfort and for knowing that there are no nasty chemicals to breathe in.

Also the service was great. I would have no hesitation in recommending these products and this family company.

We purchased a Widecombe mattress (medium) a week ago and cannot praise it enough – it is so very comfortable, yielding yet supportive and they say it gets even better over time! I sleep on my side a lot and our old mattress was too firm and consequently my shoulders and neck got scrunched up, after just a week my shoulders feel more relaxed and pain free. The mattress feels warm to get into yet doesn’t make you feel hot and sweaty when the temperature rises and although my sense of smell is very good I didn’t detect any ‘sheepy’ aroma. Yes, it’s expensive but hey, you gets what you pays for!!

  4. P. Fennell

I bought this mattress for my adult son and he says it’s the best night sleep he`s had for a long time and he is glad we bought.

Before I bought it he done a lot of research into getting a new mattress and your company came out the best.

  5. K. Adam

So, I spent a long time researching mattresses before choosing this one. I have had problems with insomnia all of my adult life so really wanted to get this right. I also, more recently, have become aware of toxic chemicals that are in our cleaning products, toiletries and our furniture. I have spent the last couple of years trying to minimise the chemicals in our home by changing over to natural products where possible. I wanted to change our mattress and became aware of the natural mattress industry, however soon realised that many mattresses that claim to be “natural” are actually treated with toxic chemicals; this is because of fire safety regulations. In other words, these companies don’t have any choice (or they think they don’t) as they have to meet with these regulations and use these nasty chemicals on their mattresses. As we spend so much time on our mattresses I thought it was really important to avoid chemicals and I also wanted comfort to help with my sleep. That’s when I discovered Cottonsafe. They seem to be the only UK company that I could find whose mattresses are genuinely natural. This is due to the Cottonsafe material that they have developed that is naturally fire retardant. I hesitated for a long time, probably a year or so, before I decided to purchase. I basically tried to see if I could find a cheaper option. I was worried that I might spend all this money and be disappointed. Eventually I decided to buy. This was following a bad bout of insomnia. The mattress I had been sleeping on was a memory foam one, which basically caused me to overheat all the time. I would wake up “on fire” and wouldn’t be able to get back to sleep. I knew this was caused by the memory foam so I decided to take the plunge and buy the new mattress. I have been sleeping on the Widecome mattress for around 2 months at the time of writing this review and I am happy to say that I am over the moon with it. It is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I love it and I am sleeping liking a baby. This might sound a bit dramatic but it’s actually changed my life. No more waking up hot and uncomfortable and I can now function normally after a good nights sleep. It just does the job it’s supposed to do and without myself and my partner being exposed to nasty chemicals. The company were great to deal with and from the point of order our mattress arrived in less than 2 weeks. Giving us a specific time slot too. So if you’re hesitating I hope this review will help you make a decision. I can’t recommend this mattress enough.

  6. M. Bianca

We absolutely love our mattress. I’m really impressed by the quality of the material & finishing. I didn’t think that it smelled too woolly when it arrived but any residual smell disappeared very quickly. It’s extremely comfortable yet secure. I was very nervous ordering, firstly because I was buying such an expensive item online without being able to get to a showroom and secondly because I’ve never tried a wool mattress before, but it’s turned out to be the most comfortable mattress both of us have slept on. I’ve had no reactions despite being a sufferer of eczema (the reason I didn’t want chemicals or fire retardants) and have an allergy to animals… I’m beyond pleased with my purchase 🙂

  7. C. Potter

The mattress arrived on time. It must be comfy because I don’t think about it. And I certainly would think about it if it wasn’t comfy.

I also went on to buy a wool mattress protector, but that was only in case my son wet the bed. I also bought a woollen duvet, so I think I am like a pig in mud or a sheep in a blanket, or pig in blanket.

Or I could just say that the mattress I really well made and extremely comfortable. And that I would both buy from you again and recommend your company.

Thank you for my well made mattress.
