- Mattress Care Guide
We’ve put together care guides for all our Cottonsafe® products, which can be found here, but here are some helpful tips and pointers to caring for our products.
Size Tolerance
The industry standard for size tolerance is +/- 2cm.
All Cottonsafe® products are made by hand, and whilst we try to produce everything to the same precision of a machine our products will also have a size tolerance of +/- 2cm.
Natural fibres may get compressed during transport and will naturally settle over time.
Let it breathe
All our natural mattresses and natural toppers contain wool, when your item first arrives you may detect what can be best described as a “farmy smell”. This is the lanolin within the sheep’s wool. It will disappear over time.
It is good practice to regularly air any mattress.
We recommend pulling your duvet back every morning to give your mattress an opportunity to breathe after having been slept in.
When it’s time to change your bedding leave it for a couple of hours before putting on fresh sheets and open up your bedroom window to increase air circulation.
Flip and Rotate Mattresses
For the first 4 – 6 months we recommend flipping and rotating your Cottonsafe® mattress with every bed change, this will ensure an even settlement of the fibres across the top surface of your mattress. After that 3 monthly or seasonal rotation and flipping will be sufficient.
If you have one of our non-turn mattresses then you will only need to rotate the mattress, do not flip.
For full guidance on caring for your Cottonsafe® product please refer to our care guides.
Toppers
Flip, rotate and shake out your topper every time you change your sheets to help refresh the fillings.
This should be done at least once a month, natural fibres will settle over time and need reviving to keep their shape.
Use a waterproof mattress protector
Harsh cleaning of your Cottonsafe® products can cause long term damage to the cover and internal fibres of your items.
Avoid toxic chemicals or allowing your items to get soaked through.
Do not try to vacuum the top surfaces of your mattress, this is likely to damage the internal fibres and loosen the specially woven cover.
A mattress protector is the most effective way of protecting your mattress or topper from unsightly stains and accidental spillages, and quite frankly, if the protector isn’t waterproof then it isn’t protecting.
Protect your Cottonsafe® products with one of our gloriously soft and super silent waterproof protectors.

It is completely normal for fibres to dip in a mattress and can’t be avoided.
