Every material that goes into a Cottonsafe® Natural Mattress product has been carefully selected for their natural, sustainable or regenerative purposes.
The materials we use all have unique characteristics that make them irreplaceable for the manufacture of mattresses whilst reducing our impact on the planet.
Whether it is organic certified wool or ethically sourced bamboo all our materials are carefully selected from suppliers we trust.
From comfort and temperature control to health and wellbeing, we use only the finest materials known for their sleep health benefits.
All our fibres are completely chemical free. That means no harmful spray adhesives and absolutely no Fire-Retardant chemicals. We pass the stringent UK fire regulations naturally and are the first company in the UK to have done so.
Coir
Coir is made from natural coconut fibre which is extracted for the coconut husk. A widely available resource, with coconut palms growing on 10 million hectares of land throughout the tropics this amazingly versatile fibre is largely discarded as waste by the food industry.
Flexible and breathable coir is naturally adaptive to the human body making it exceptionally comfortable, a valuable raw material it is also extremely hardy making it an ideal fibre to use in mattresses and futons.
Cotton
Our clever Cottonsafe® fabric is made with organic cotton, undyed and unbleached it is grown sustainably in India without the use of chemicals or pesticides. The cotton fibres within our mattresses is not organic, however it remains pesticide free and is grown without the use of chemicals.
Cotton is breathable, soft and comfortable when it comes into contact with the skin. Hypoallergenic, this luxurious natural fibre is excellent for allergies, skin and breathing conditions. Strong and durable it is easy to see why it has become a firm favourite in mattresses the world over.
Wool
Comfortable, soft, insulating, and breathable, wool allows the body to keep warm and snug in cooler weather and disperses warmth when the body gets too hot. Naturally fire retardant, it has a much higher ignition threshold than many other fibres, it also produces less toxic fumes than that of chemical fire retardants. With its antimicrobial qualities wool is free from chemicals and dust-mites. So, wool really is a natural wonder.
Sourcing our wool from British farms we are proud supporters of The Campaign for Wool. Patroned by the former Prince of Wales they advocate the Five Freedoms, devised and upheld by The Royal Society of Protection of Cruelty to Animals and the Chief Veterinary Officer in the UK, which ensure sheep flocks have a good Lifestyle, Nutrition, Environment, Handling and Health.
Our organic wool, sourced from British farms, is GOTS certified, with our hand teased wool coming from a local Devon farm.
Bamboo
A grown wonder-plant that grows up to three feet a day, providing high yields per acre, saving land. Our Bamboo is sustainably grown in managed forests, meeting the highest social and environmental standards. It requires a third less water than cotton to thrive and doesn’t need pesticides, fertilisers or chemicals.
We love bamboo because it’s antibacterial, anti-microbial and inhospitable to micro-organisms and parasites such as dust mites and bed bugs, it’s moisture and odour-wicking, hypoallergenic, temperature regulating, breathable and insulating.
Hemp
Strong and durable, hemp is another high-yield crop which is sustainable to grow, we use hemp in our mattresses to act as a barrier between the fillings of the mattress and the springs. Hemp is resistant to mildew and has natural anti-bacterial properties making it a useful fibre to add to a mattress.
Cashmere
Despite the glamour associated with cashmere it hails from humble beginnings. Cashmere comes from the soft underbelly of Kashmir goats, these nomadic creatures roam the mountainous terrains of India, Mongolia, Tibet, and Iran.
Beautifully soft, this ultra fine fibre is both long lasting and resilient and with amazing insulation qualities make it the perfect addition to a luxurious mattress, like our Exeter Cashmere Mattress.
Silk
For centuries, silk has had a reputation as a luxurious and sensuous fabric associated with wealth and success. But why use it in a mattress? Silk is an incredibly strong natural fibre making it durable for regular use, plus it is a wonderful insulator, keeping you warm in the winter and cool in the summer – but most importantly it is a natural deterrent for dust mites and bed bugs, making it a brilliant natural alternative to chemical treatments.
Feathers
Our feather pillows are a mix of feather and down from Peking Ducks. Not only are the luxuriously soft but they are DOWNPASS certified.
DOWNPASS guarantee high quality and the certainty that down and feathers used as filling material are ethically sourced and come from tightly controlled and traceable supply chains.
Polyester
Our polished thread polyester has hypoallergenic properties which makes it ideal for people with chemical sensitivity and allergies. Polyester, used in mattresses, is inherently fire retardant, highly breathable and does not contribute to plastic (microfibre) pollution because it’s not washed.
Polyester is blended with cotton fibres to improve the loft and increase the air flow of the cotton, without the support of the polyester cotton cushioning used within a mattress will matt and flatten.
The Purotex+ fabric used on our vegan range of products is OEKO-TEX certified.
