WHAT ARE HIGHLY FLUORINATED CHEMICALS - PFAS?
Highly fluorinated chemicals, often referred to as PFASs (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), are a group of chemicals containing carbon-fluorine bonds deemed
"Forever Chemicals". In this class of chemicals there are PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic acid) , PFOS (Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid) and more than 3,000 related compounds.
The function of highly fluorinated chemicals is to give the material oil, heat, stain, and water-repellent properties. Within the furniture and bedding industry these chemicals are mainly used as surface treatment on mattresses and textiles to waterproof and prevent staining .
WHAT ARE THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND HEALTH CONCERNS?
Highly fluorinated chemicals are bio accumulative and persistent substances, which means that they don’t break down but instead will remain in the environment .
Some of the highly fluorinated chemicals are linked to a wide range of health problems such as cancer, hormone disruption, reduced fertility and impacts on the immune system - https://chemtrust.org/furniture/
