Cot Mattress Safety
Cot and Cot Bed mattresses must carry the Fire and Safety BSI (British Standards Institution) certification but the current system is complicated.
BS 1877-10:2011+A1:2012 are Mandatory Standards which considers the construction, materials and dimensions required when manufacturing cot mattresses
BS 7177:1996 guarantees it has passed Flammability Standards.
All Cottonsafe® and Vegan Cot and Cot Bed mattresses are certified to meet these standards.
There is also a newer European voluntary standard: BS EN 16890:2017 which offers a wider range of tests considering the safety and performance of cot mattresses. This includes tests which check for swallowing and choking hazards, such as stickers or loose zip pulls, as well as suffocation and entrapment risks. It includes an important firmness test to ensure that a baby’s face will not sink into the mattress surface and potentially suffocate them.
Our Cottonsafe® Cot and Cot Bed mattresses and Vegan Cot and Cot Bed mattresses conforms to BS EN 16890:2017 (8.2.3 + 8.5.2.2). To meet this standard, manufacturers’ have to consider a wide range of safety issues:
- The support the baby needs
- The firmness of the surface area
- Durability and structural integrity
- Air flow
- Shrinkage
- Moisture resistance
- Swallowing and choking hazards
- Chemical and entrapment hazards
- Labels
- Plastic packaging
