Here is an interesting video by Arlene Blum and the Green Science Policy Institute with a good introduction into the world of Fire Retardants. It is also worth mentioning that in the USA flame retardants are used in the fillings, but not the outer cover material. Here in the UK we use far greater amounts in our furniture.

Everyone is afraid of fire, but research has proven that the Fire Retardant (FR) chemicals used on UK furniture is harmful to our health and environment. FR's, many carcinogenic, migrate as dust particles from furniture into our homes to be ingested by adults, children and pets. It is skin permeable and many are endocrine disruptors which can cause obesity and behavioral problems in children and even cancer.

Do you know what is in your mattress? We believe that everyone should be able to simply look at a label on their mattress to know what's inside, not just the fillings but the chemical treatments too. When buying food you can look at the list of ingredients, why not with a mattress?

There's no fire without smoke. And smoke is deadly. The Fire Service know that the amount of Hydrogen Cyanide that is released in smoke causes death. 180 parts per million causes death in 10 minutes and at 270 parts per million death is immediate[1].

The Canadian Broadcasting Company released this programme after concerns about flame retardants. Television and media in Canada and America can speak openly about the problems about FR's. It begs the question why doesn't UK television and media inform the British public. As a country Britain has one of the highest levels of FR's in the home.
